That depends heavily on the fabric width and your size. For conventional denim (approx. 140 to 150 cm wide), you generally need about 1.5 to 2 meters (approx. 1.65 to 2.2 yards) for an adult pair of jeans. Please note, however: Selvedge denim is often narrower due to the old looms (approx. 80 to 90 cm). In this case, you should calculate for 2.5 to 3 meters (approx. 2.75 to 3.3 yards). If you can't decide given our large selection, we also have starter sets put together for you!

This depends on your approach, as untreated, pure cotton denim can shrink by 5 to 10% on the first wash. Two paths are open to you:
- The Standard Way: You wash the fabric before cutting. This ensures that the finished jeans are not too small after the first wash. Additionally, excess indigo dye bleeds out, protecting your hands and the sewing machine while you work.
- The Professional Way (Shrink-to-Fit): You process the fabric unwashed to maintain the authentic, stiff raw denim character. To do this, you only wash a small test piece beforehand, calculate the exact shrinkage, and precisely enlarge your pattern by this percentage.

Denim is measured in ounces (oz) per square yard.

- Midweight (10-13 oz): The standard for most classic jeans and jackets. Beginner-friendly for sewing!
- Heavyweight (14+ oz): Very robust and stiff fabric for true denim fans and workwear. Requires a strong sewing machine.

Absolutely! That's the highlight of selvedge denim. When planning your pattern, align the straight outer seam of the pant leg precisely with the fabric's selvedge edge. This way, you won't need to finish that seam later, and when you cuff your finished jeans, you'll proudly display the traditional selvedge detail.
